- TITLE OF THE ACTIVITY: On Creativity, Stress, Self-Discovery, Perspective, Encouragement, Education, Improvisation, and Obedience

- DETAILED CONTENT DESCRIPTION (max. 2000 characters):

Where I get to teach young dancers in higher education, many will not have an instinct developed [an instinct I've noticed visual art students being likely to have developed very early on], which is to deal with hardship creatively. Young dancers I get to work with generally tend to face hardships with worry. The source of that strategy might be an underlying assumption that if hardship is met, it is met becuase 'the young dancer already did something wrong, they already failed, they already exposed their shortcomings and there is nothing they can do about it anymore but beat themselves up about it.'

At the Symposium 2017 I would like to present 'a speculative lecture' concerning the kind of experience I've had teaching dancing through 'principle not form' with regards to my mission to 'encourage first, talk about good art second.' With this 'speculative lecture' I am hoping to challenge the establishemnet, intutionalised forms of knowledge production and art making, especially in the field of dance and choreography, by putting the notion of 'obedience' at stake by asking the following question: Does 'obedience' – demanded by so many a dance training program – actually help make a good dance artist?

This interest comes from an observation I made not too long ago, which I formulated in the following question: Why is it that more than half the class I met at the beginning of their university-level studies in 'dance performance' confessed that never before in their dance education have they been asked to form a reflection or an opinion and express it publically (i.e. before the rest of the class, before the rest of the school)?

If presented at the Symposium, this 'speculative lecture' will be presented at 'the Assembly,' which is a TOGETHER ALONE form of exchange practiced regularly at Dance Concerts, organised by TOGETHER ALONE in collaboration with SITE Sweden. (more on that here) 'The Assembly' is (1) a practice of being together alone in a functionally-disfunctional conversation (2) in which 'feedback' is not given, feedback is taken By presenting this 'speculative lecture' at 'the Assembly' I wish to introduce some of my findings in practice as well as in theory. By presenting this 'speculative lecture' at 'the Assembly' I wish to propose the kind of exchange in which the lecture is only thought provoking and inspiring of a concersation.

The focal point of this session will the informative conversation I aim at moderating regarding some of the concerns expressed in this application and the speculative lecture in question.
