Program & Schedule

We are openning our experiential journey with a lecture by Glenna Batson, who has honed a trans-disciplinary approach to the study of embodied cognition by bridging dance, science and somatic studies for over 4 decades.

We will than dive into a workshop/lecture co-facilitated by Carol Brownchoreographer, performer, teacher and writer, originally trained in the Bodenwieser Method, whose work crosses between the contemporary and the archival, the somatic and the virtual and the conceptual and corporeal. She will be with Thomas Kampe, who worked with movement, dance, theatre, and live-art for the last 30 years as performer, choreographer, director and educator and has taught somatic approaches towards movement education in different settings around the world, currently involved in revisioning the Feldenkrais lineage from a feminist point of view.

As we will be feeding forward the rethinking of the value and usage of somatic work in an artistic, pedagogic, and socio-political context; we will not forget feeding our bodies... There will be many sessions proposed all along... When and how?

––This is the big challenge of IDOCDE has taken up this year, to practice what we’ve preached, as a community, i.e. to survive our own desire for establishing relationships, meeting in the arena where professional interests live side by side with private needs like hunger, and tiredness, excitement and exhaustion. (pavleheidler)

We have planned another provoking journey to the worlds of Nita Little, founder of ISSC––Institute for the Study of Somatic Communication, who is concerned with dance as a means to greater ecological engagement, and who has been developing a movement methodology that trains the mindbody through the physicality of attentional practices, and Katelyn Skelley,  dancer, educator and choreographer, whose recent research analyzes how adaptations in Trisha Brown’s choreographic work are in close relation with the socio-economic and socio-political climate in the United States from 1962 until 1998. We will visit the inquires of them, through the lens of Kristian Larsen, a New Zealand based dance artist with an extensive background in a broad spectrum of contemporary dance practice spanning professional, institutional and academic spheres.

We also plan to give time and space for our good old Paper Scissor Stone format which will host Mary Overlie, choreographer, dancer, author, originator of the Six Viewpoints: a conceptual articulation for postmodern performance and a teaching system that is applicable to directing, choreographing, dancing, acting, improvisation, and analysis; Anastasia Stoyannides, previously a performer who have explored improvisation as a key to spontaneous creativity, and a seasoned yoga teacher in the technique of Eva Ruchpaul's Hatha Yoga "bien tempéré" who shares this method across Europe; and MaRia Probst, a Vienna based artist, member of SOMEX group, who investigates the subtle and poetic layers of the body and mind through somatics, improvisational movement, contemporary dance and voice exploration. They will be invited to share the essence of their somatic practices through the lense of Sylvia Scheidl, another member of the Viennese group SOMEX–– dance makers and somatic movement educators who have been collaborating in interdisciplinary artistic basic research with their backgrounds in somatic and performative practices investigating processes of perception, cognition and decision-making. Sylvia has an MA in dance education where she inquired the mind processing beneath the level of consciousness and slow knowing, as a fertile ground and supportive environment for creativity and learning in dance education.

With the emphasis on desire for establishing relationships, we as the IDOCDE Team will give a pause in curating/framing the flow of events at one point and leave the ground, trusting the self-ignition and self-righting capacity of the community at stake : participants will be invited to meet and "interview" eachother. If at any moment anyone gets disoriented Mariella Greil (another member of the Viennese group SOMEX, is a performer, choreographer and researcher -- a Key Researcher in the research project “Choreo-graphic Figures (2014-2017), Associate Researcher in the artistic research project “performance matters” (2009-2013) and senior editor for the e -journal “activate”. Currently, Mariella Greil is a PhD fellow at the University Roehampton in London in the field of dance / performance) will be there to support and orient us back to the flux.

And yes! We will eat together, where silent eating corner will serve mindful gourmands. And if we are lucky we may be sitting close to Dr. Julia Rastelli (who holds a doctorate in biology and who have worked as a scientist for 10 years in cancer research at renowned institutes in Germany and the USA, who also has completed training in holistic herbalism and "PLANT SPIRIT MEDICINE".) We may be invited in to a new kind of awareness and relationship with nature and the plants and experience intaking and digestin as a new practice!

Charles Koroneho (working in the fields of performance and culture, who has created Te Toki
Haruru (est 1997) to explore cultural collaboration and the intersection between dance,
theatre and design; and whose projects are presented as performances, workshops and research
facilitation; exploring the collision between Maori cosmology, New Zealand society and
global cultures) will be sharing his reflections with us about how he perceives the whole symposium in reference to the hui practices.

We will than start moving to re-visit the Somatic NoteBOOK within the frame of the Moving Library's initial research question: How do we associate/ accomodate/ personalize existing documents and embody the information that is transmitted through them?  MoveReading Scores proposed by The Moving Library Team (Research Director : Defne Erdur Rabuel (France/Turkey) DanceResearchers: Kateryna Taranova (Ukraine), Wei Xie (China), Dilek Üstünalan (Turkey), Marie-Louise Schelde Handberg (Denmark), Ziva Jerman (Slovenia); Research Associate: Dr.Bengisu Koyuncu (Turkey)) will conduce towards  supporting the research team to continue their inquriry in order to challenge old models of learning, review definitions of intelligence, and examine the body's ability to learn and develop knowledge.
