Here you find a link to a video documentation of a lecture given on the title "Functionality without function":

And here´s an abstract to present what is talked about:

Functionality without function.
- relating technique to choreography.

The core question in my research as in my professional practice nowadays is the relation between the choreographical work and the pedagogical. On the practical level, as well as on the conceptual. How is technique related to art making? Where is the craft in contemporary choreography and how should one approach education accordingly?

In this presentation I will address these questions through a conflict I have in relation to my own thoughts on function and functionality.

In my work of uncovering the body to myself (as I would describe the technical work I engage in) I’ve found an interest in bodily functions and thus a somewhat functionalistic approach to movement. But inside that functionalism lures dangerous evolutionistic norms about what is natural and what is not. There’s a paradox here that I find productive. Evolution has undoubtedly shaped our bodies. What the body is able limits its functions, but then as mankind challenges those limits evolution follows and there’s a dialogue between form and function. In this sense I can use my body as archaeological tool into my own body, uncovering inherent functionalities and then see how I can use them for something else since the art making in itself is not interested in the function of that functionality, but instead what possibilities it presents to me. Here´s a wedge placed  between functionality and function and my presentation will evolve in the space that wedge creates.

Dear Rasmus, a belated thank you for your posting. I was wondering if it would be possible to have the video uploaded also on our site. Because any link that may disappear from the cyber space will disappear here. But if we upload them already here - we have our back up, our archive! Asl always, thank you for your contributions. Hej Defne and Celine
I don't have the video it is from DOCH, they posted it, so I can't upload. But I can check if I can have it.

Celine, go ahead and see the video to see if it gives you anything! Art - nature - technique... big question.
