The September Issue

Dear Member of the IDOCDE Community,

This is the first Editorial written in the aftermath of the 7th IDOCDE symposium Tracing Forwards –––––––– intersecting (somatic) legacies and future (art) practices. Some thank yous are in order. Following, team IDOCDE is saying goodbye to a core team member, saying hello to core team member, and reporting on an overall restructuring of the core team. In closing, read the overdue specification for the symposium* raffle: your chance to win a MIKME easy-to-use BLUETOOTH microphone.

THANK YOU

A great, fat, juicy, drippy, sweet-smelling THANK YOU is due to every contributor, every assistent, every volunteer, every participant, every workshop-office employee, every ImPulsTanz festival supporter of the IDOCDE symposium who has helped manifest the 25 hour long event that was the 7th IDOCDE symposium. We––literally––couldn’t have done it without you.

It was only in the aftermath of the symposium, which came over my body like long-haul jet-lag, that I began to understand what it was that we’ve done; that I began to understand just how much was at stake. The community that started to appear in the early hours of the morning: the sleeping through lectures, the walking around with toothbrushes and toothpaste, the patient support witnessed through delayed set-ups and unexpected draw-backs; all that and more without losing focus and concentration, without losing interest in the argument––however complex and challenging it may be. It was in that complexity and intensity of the experience that we started “walking the talk,” I felt. It was in that complexity that we’ve started caring for the intellectual and the spiritual and the emotional, the human in the professional, and the professional in the human.

And though a great achievement, in many ways it was also only a possible start of a different politic, a potentially anti-capitalist politic, a potentially anti-colonial politic, a potential politic that is not resistant to conflict, but is yet to learn how to embrace, process, and learn from conflict.

TEAM IDOCDE

Eszter Gál, team coordinator since 2013, has stepped down from her position starting this fall. Eszter will remain a supporting figure, something of an external advisor, following IDOCDE’s future endeavours and projects. Thank you, Eszter, for all your time, all the intellectual, emotional, and spiritual labour you’ve invested in IDOCDE and the many projects IDOCDE engaged in over the years: LEAP, REFLEX, Mind the Dance, and the IDOCDE symposiums.

Dilek Üstünalan has joined the IDOCDE team just ahead of the 7th IDOCDE symposium in the place of the technology coordinator. Welcome Dilek to the team!

Defne Erdur, who has blessed––and driven––the IDOCDE website with her editorial skills, has now assumed the position of the IDOCDE Ambassador. Defne has been and will continue to travel, attend dance festivals and conferences concerned with the notion and the practice of dance, choreography, pedagogy, and contact improvisation (to name but a few of our interests), as a representative of IDOCDE. Her work continues to draw people’s attention to the work of IDOCDE, both off and online, and continues to enrich and widen our reach: all in the benefit of the IDOCDE community.

Which leaves me, pavleheider, who is, for the time being, taking up the role of the sole editor of the IDOCDE website. I say “for the time being” because hopefully it won’t take long before the website gets what it deserves, a new co-editor. You, the members of the community, might notice the change of editorial style, and might have feelings about it: I welcome your feedback. My plan, which I will introduce in more detail in the next IDOCDE Editorial, is to take time this fall to learn what it is that the IDOCDE website is most used for at the moment. I will share with you, the community, at least one survey, and ask you to answer my questions. Remember, the primary provider of content for this website is its community. The primary benefactor of this website is, you guessed it, its community. My question is: what kind of resources do you need and how can I help create the conditions which creates the resource and makes it available to you?
