Hello… What are you doing here?

The May Issue: Onwards with IDOCDE!

Dear Member of the IDOCDE Community,

as many of you will know by now, the ImPulsTanz Dance Festival of 2020 was officially cancelled. What this means for the IDOCDE symposium is that the symposium is–now officially and with the support of the ImPulsTanz Dance Festival–going to take place on-line.

There was no reason to change the dates, which means that the symposium-related events are still scheduled to take place between the 20th and the 26th of July. At the time of writing this Editorial, we are leaning towards spreading out the symposium-related events throughout the week, instead of focusing them on the weekend alone. There are several reasons that motivate this thinking. First is simple: we’d like to avoid spending too many hours at the computer at any one sitting. Second is methodological; as it looks like now, we’re likely to be hosting a variety of formats: from the lecture-presentation-performance kind, which could be of interest to a larger group of people and would benefit from a short outburst of high-powered concentration, to the hands-on creative, contemplative, and fantasmagorical kind, which could be of interest to smaller groups of people who might be interested in utilising longer stretches of time to accommodate their processes.

If you read our previous Editorial, you know that we’ve initiated a series of online meetings under the title Virtual Space for Taking Place. We are currently thinking of these meetings as the IDOCDE Residency “Expanded Edition.” The Virtual Space for Taking Place is a becoming series of online meetings in which members of the IDOCDE Community discuss relevant and current topics, engage in reflective and creative processes, share experiences and slowly work their way towards the emerging 2020 IDOCDE symposium. These meetings are developing sensitive to the needs and wants put forth by their participants.

The existing Virtual Work-Groups are currently negotiating their ways; some have decided to invest time working in controlled environments, others are welcoming new members at all times. We are going to be scheduling entirely new groups just as soon as a need for that arises. All invitations to join existing and new groups will be announced on IDOCDE’s homepage and via our social media outlets (Facebook, Instagram).

Starting next week (week 20) Virtual Work-Groups will be hosting public sessions on specific topics. The first one of these will take place on May 14th at 10AM CEST. The session will focus on the meaning of the words public and public space, and how the meanings of these words changed and are changing in this new world we’re learning how to live in.

In closing,

This world is changing at a more obvious–if not a higher rate–as it used to when things were “normal.” We here at IDOCDE are working to share with you the information just as soon as we have it in as clear a format as possible, without failing to acknowledge the opportunity that we’re facing. Namely, the opportunity to learn how to do things differently.

Thank you for your time and attention,
